About
Linda
The race that transformed me wasn’t the one I won.
In 2000, I competed in the Sydney Olympic Games in the Women’s Eight. We crossed the finish line in sixth place — last in the A final. It was the most devastating moment of my athletic career. And it taught me the most important lesson of my life.
For years, I had tied my identity to outcomes. Medals. Rankings. Comparisons.
But the race that transformed me wasn’t the one I lost. It was the one where I stopped measuring myself against everyone else.
Beyond the Yardstick is a keynote about performance, freedom, and the paradox at the heart of excellence:
The less you cling to outcomes, the more capable you become.

Beyond the Yardstick
Unlocking Your True Potential
We live in a culture obsessed with metrics—titles, rankings, and quarterly results. But there is a paradox at the heart of excellence: when we tie our identity to these outcomes, we actually shrink our potential.
YARDSTICK
In this deeply personal and intellectually sharp keynote, Olympic rower Linda shares the paradox elite performers eventually discover:

Mastery lives in the present moment
You are not entitled to an outcome
Attention is your most valuable currency
Freedom enhances performance
Control the controllables

In high-pressure environments — especially leadership — performance anxiety often hides behind phrases like “high standards.”
But fear tightens thinking. Comparison narrows creativity. Attachment distorts behavior.
